NISO Webinar, Skills Development for 21st Century Knowledge Workers, February 9, 2022

Beyond the basic office skills in using word processing software or spreadsheets, what skills are most in demand in today’s knowledge organizations? Is the rising population of knowledge workers properly equipped with the data management skills needed for working with sophisticated tools such as Salesforce? What is needed to properly equip a 21st century information workforce? How do you identify the skills of each team member and support their future development? This roundtable will gather decision-makers from across the information community to talk about the practicalities, challenges, and opportunities for today’s employers and employees. Angela Cochran

Vice President, Publishing, American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO)


Angela Cochran is the Vice President of Publishing for the American Society of Clinical Oncology. Previously, she was Managing Director and Publisher at the American Society of Civil Engineers in Reston, Virginia. She has served in the roles of Associate Publisher, Journals Director, Production Director, and Journals Production Manager for ASCE. She was a Managing Editor at the American Cancer Society and a Production Editor for Appleton & Lange and at Pearson Education. She is past-president of the Society for Scholarly Publishing and the Council of Science Editors. She is a regular contributor of The Scholarly Kitchen.

Dean J. Smith

Director, Duke University Press


Dean Smith is Director of Duke University Press. His career in publishing spans more than 30 years and includes experience in scholarly, STM, university press, and trade- and association-based publishing. He brings a wealth of experience in leading digital publishing initiatives, business development and acquisition skills, open-access publishing, global sales and marketing expertise, and strategic planning skills. His career has evolved with the profession in a variety of roles including as press director, digital platform director, journal publisher, director of electronic publishing, vice president of sales, and marketing and society publisher. He was most recently the director of Cornell University Press—the first university press in America—overseeing a program that publishes 150 new books a year and features 3,400 e-books. He is a published author, poet, and freelance journalist. His book of poetry, American Boy (2000), is openly accessible. He published Never Easy, Never Pretty: A Fan, A City, A Championship Season(2013) with Temple University Press. He is an adjunct professor of publishing in the Masters in Professional Studies program at George Washington University. One of his all-time favorite moments was doing a public talk with John Cleese

Dr. Guylaine Beaudry

University Librarian, Concordia University


Guylaine Beaudry was first appointed to the position of university librarian by Concordia’s Board of Governors on May 1, 2014. Her second five-year term began on July 1, 2019. From 2017 to 2021 she was also vice-provost of digital strategy.

Beaudry joined the university in October 2009 as director of the Webster Library, and she served as interim university librarian from July 2013 to April 2014. Previously, she was director of the Digital Publishing Centre at the Université de Montréal and executive director of Érudit, a publishing platform for scholarly books and journals in the social sciences and humanities.

She has authored many books on scholarly publishing, including La communication scientifique et le numérique (2011) published at Hermès/Lavoisier and Profession : Bibliothécaire (2012) at Les Presses de l’Université de Montréal. She served as president of the Corporation of Professional Librarians of Quebec from 2008 to 2010. She was a member of the Royal Society of Canada Expert Panel on the status and future of libraries in Canada.

Her work has been funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada and the Fonds québécois de recherche sur la société et la culture.

Beaudry holds a PhD in History of the Book from École pratique des hautes études (Paris) and a Master of Library and Information Science from Université de Montréal.

Joseph Salem

Dean of University Libraries, Michigan State University


Joseph A. Salem, Jr. serves as the Dean of Libraries University and Interim Associate Provost for Teaching and Learning Innovation at Michigan State. He has published and presented widely on open educational resources, student engagement, teaching and learning, library assessment, and library management. Dr. Salem earned his PhD in Evaluation and Measurement and MLS from Kent State University. He has served as psychometrician on two national information literacy initiatives, Project SAILS (Standardized Assessment of Information Literacy Skills) and the K-12 TRAILS (Tool for Real-Time Assessment of Information Literacy Skills). He also served as an ARL Leadership Fellow from 2016 to 2017 and was recognized as the 2017 Kent State School of Library and Information Science Alumnus of the Year. He has held tenure or a tenure equivalent at four institutions, including three ARL peers.

Karen Schneider

Dean of the Library, Sonoma State University


Karen G. Schneider is Dean of the Library at Sonoma State University. She joined SSU in January 2015, her fifth time in a senior leadership role. She recently led a major renovation of her library’s busiest wing that established a “Student Success District.” In 2019 she was elected to ALA Executive Board and she is a commissioner for the Sonoma County Library. She has taught library science classes and presented widely on change management, intellectual freedom, and the role of optimism in leadership. Her awards include the 1998 University of Illinois iSchool Alumni Association Leadership Award and the 2014 Elizabeth Futas Catalyst for Change Award from ALA. She has a Masters in Library Science from the University of Illinois and a Ph.D. in Managerial Leadership in the Information Professions from Simmons College. She lives in Santa Rosa, California with her wife Sandy and their cat, Squeak.
