NISO Virtual Conference, Open Research

Open research — making the entire research process more transparent, and results more accessible, in the interest of reproducibility and verification — continues to gain momentum globally. This event looked at the current state of open research around the world, examining needs across different communities, and identifying next steps that might be useful in helping to meet those needs. The agenda covered a broad range of topics, including open peer review and data-sharing, reproducibility, and metrics for open access outputs, as well as the current and future role of publication in preserving the scholarly record. These half-day events cover a range of important and timely topics in more depth than our monthly webinars. With expert speakers from across the information community, they include a mix of formats — keynotes, case studies, perspectives, and vision interviews. Recordings are shared immediately with registered participants, and made openly available after two years.

Alison Mudditt


Alison Mudditt joined PLOS as Chief Executive Officer in June, 2017, where her primary role is to ensure PLOS’s continuous innovation, bold leadership, and mission-driven differentiation in scientific communication. Prior to PLOS, Alison served as Director of the University of California Press for six years where she ushered in new strategies to lead the Press into the digital age and as Executive Vice President at SAGE Publications, leading publishing programs across books, journals and digital platforms. Her 30 years in the publishing industry also include leadership positions at Blackwell Publishers in Oxford, UK, and Taylor & Francis Inc., in Philadelphia. Alison is a frequent speaker at industry meetings and currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Center for Open Science and the Society for Scholarly Publishing, and on the Advisory Board for the Authors’ Alliance. In the past, Alison has also served on the Board of ALPSP, as Vice Chair of the Scientific Publications Committee and a member of the Open Science Committee for the American Heart Association; on the Executive Council of the Professional and Scholarly Publishing Division of the American Association of Publishers; and as Co-Chair of the Dean’s Leadership Council at California State University, Channel Islands.

Gabriela Mejias

Engagement Manager, Global Consortia, ORCID

Gabriela Mejias is the ORCID Engagement Manager for Global Consortia, leading the team that supports 24 national consortia. As part of her role, she works with communities of practice implementing institutional and national strategies of ORCID adoption and engages with the wider community to raise awareness of persistent identifiers (PIDs). She is interested in learning more about and contributing to open research infrastructures. She is a NISO Plus 2020 awardee and serves in the NISO DEIA and NISO Plus Advisory committees.

Glenn Hampson

Program Director, Open Scholarship Initiative

Glenn Hampson is the founder and director of the Open Scholarship Initiative (OSI), a UN-sponsored global initiative created to help design the future of more open methods of research publishing and communication. He is also the founder and executive director of the Science Communication Institute (SCI), a US-based nonprofit focused on improving the communication that happens inside science. Prior to OSI and SCI, Glenn served as a senior project manager and Institutional Review Board member with the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, a communications director with the University of Washington, the founder and president of Castle Pacific Publishing Company, managing editor and webmaster at the World Bank Group’s International Finance Corporation, associate editor for the Riverside Publishing Company, and a caseworker and field representative for the US House of Representatives. He has also authored, ghost-written and edited a number of books, founded and run several charities focusing on kids in need and the helping the homeless, and in his spare time, has run for public office, and served on several boards and community organizations. Glenn currently coaches youth baseball and basketball, and is an active school volunteer. He holds two undergraduate degrees, in history and physics/astronomy, from the University Washington, and a graduate degree in public administration from American University. Glenn lives in Seattle with his wife and 13 year-old son.

Jason Priem


As a PhD student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Jason led the creation of the field of altmetrics--coining the term, authoring the influential Altmetrics Manifesto, and leading the first altmetrics workshops. In 2013 Jason co-founded Impactstory (now Our Research), a nonprofit building open software to promote the growth of open science. Since then Our Research has received funding from the US National Science Foundation, US National Institutes of Health, the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, and others. Jason’s latest project with Our Research is Unpaywall, an open database of 20 million free-to-read scholarly papers used by millions of researchers and lay readers worldwide.

Jennifer Regala

Director of Publications/Executive Editor, American Urological Association

Jennifer Regala is the Director of Publications/Executive Editor at the American Urological Association, where she oversees the publications department, including peer review and production processes of the AUA’s flagship journal, The Journal of Urology®, and its practice journal, Urology Practice®; AUANews, the membership newsletter and digital ecosystem; and multiple meetings- and CME-related publications. In January 2023, the AUA will launch a fully open access journal, JU Open Plus. Jennifer has worked in scholarly publication for more than 20 years at Cadmus, Sheridan, and the American Society of Plant Biologists.

Co-founder, Coherent Digital

Toby Green tames wild content and makes it useful for researchers, professionals, academics and students. He has 35+ years experience in scholarly, policy and professional publishing: books, reports, papers, journals, data and grey literature with OECD Publishing, Elsevier Science, Pergamon Press and Academic Press. Toby was a pioneer of freemium open access publishing and has a long track record of innovation in digital publishing. He is a regular speaker at publishing and librarian events in Europe and North America including: Charleston, CNI, NISO, ALA/SLA, ALPSP, OASPA, STM, SSP, UKSG Forum, Fiesole, PIAM, London Book Fair . . . Currently, he serves as expert advisor to the Open Research Community. Previously, he was a member of the Royal Society of Chemistry Publishing Board and Chair and Council Member ALPSP.
