NISO Virtual Conference, Owning, Licensing, and Sharing Digital Content

The lines are being drawn for the next “big thing.” What are the appropriate privileges for handling digital content? How should we think about the uses of and rights associated with digital assets? Users are understandably baffled when, having been “sold” an ebook, they subsequently discover they only have a limited form of access — it doesn’t “belong” to them in the traditional sense at all. Is it time to renegotiate the parameters laid down for licensing content and lending practices? If so, whose rights and whose practices will be affected? This interactive virtual conference featured a variety of stakeholders (including attendees) discussing the needs and the challenges of owning, licensing and sharing digital materials. Brewster Kahle

Founder & Digital Librarian, Internet Archive

A passionate advocate for public Internet access and a successful entrepreneur, Brewster Kahle has spent his career intent on a singular focus: providing Universal Access to All Knowledge. He is the founder and Digital Librarian of the Internet Archive, one of the largest libraries in the world. Soon after graduating from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he studied artificial intelligence, Kahle helped found the company Thinking Machines, a parallel supercomputer maker. In 1989, Kahle created the Internet's first publishing system called Wide Area Information Server (WAIS), later selling the company to AOL. In 1996, Kahle co-founded Alexa Internet, which helps catalog the Web, selling it to Amazon.com in 1999. The Internet Archive, which he founded in 1996, now preserves 70 petabytes of data - the books, Web pages, music, television, and software of our cultural heritage, working with more than 750 library and university partners to create a digital library, accessible to all.

Brian O'Leary

Executive Director - Book Industry Study Group

Brian O’Leary is executive director of the Book Industry Study Group, a U.S.-based trade association that disseminates information, creates and implements standards and conducts research to benefit the book publishing supply chain.

Before being named to this role in 2016, O'Leary was principal of Magellan Media Consulting, which helped publishers improve how they create, manage and distribute content. In that role, O’Leary wrote extensively about issues affecting the publishing industry. With Hugh McGuire, he co-edited Book: A Futurist's Manifesto (O'Reilly Media, 2012). O’Leary served as senior VP with Hammond Inc. and oversaw production and distribution operations at several Time Inc. magazines.

O’Leary joined Time Inc. after earning an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School. He also holds an A.B. in chemistry from Harvard College.

Erin Weller

Head of Access Services, Michigan State University

Erin Weller is Head of Access Services at the Michigan State University Main Library. Erin started working at the library as an undergraduate student in 2001, and over the years has moved into several different leadership roles. Most recently, Erin worked to establish a system for Controlled Digital Lending for Reserve Reading at MSU.

Jill Morris

Executive Director, PALCI

Jill Morris is the Executive Director of the PALCI Consortium (Pennsylvania Academic Library Consortium, Inc.), made up of 69 academic and research libraries in PA, NY, NJ, and WV. For the past ten years, Jill has worked for large library consortia where her primary responsibilities have centered around collaborative collections and program design, as well as library content negotiations. Jill became PALCI's Executive Director in January 2019, after previously serving as the organization's Senior Program Officer and Associate Director. Prior to her time at PALCI, Jill held a number of positions with the NC LIVE consortium in North Carolina. Jill currently leads a number of cross-consortial projects, including the CC-PLUS initiative, funded by IMLS, to build an open source platform for the harvest, display and analysis of consortium eResource usage statistics. Jill received her MSLS from UNC Chapel Hill and holds a BA in History from SUNY Geneseo.

Joan Lindsay

Head of Systems IT, Michigan State University

Joan Lindsay is head of the Systems IT Department at the MSU Libraries. Prior to her current role, Joan served as an information technologist administering servers and virtualization systems for the MSU Libraries. Joan recently worked on establishing Controlled Digital Lending for Course Reserves.
