These half-day events cover a range of important and timely topics in more depth than our monthly webinars. With expert speakers from across the information community, they include a mix of formats — keynotes, case studies, perspectives, and vision interviews. Recordings are shared immediately with registered participants, and made openly available after two years.

Erika Valenti directs all aspects of the company’s development in the region, including sales, product introduction, brand presence, and corporate strategy.  Prior to Emerald, Erika was Global Sales Director for Publishers Communication Group working with clients including BioOne, American Society for Microbiology, the Royal Society, Geological Society of London, and Canadian Science Publishing; and she previously spent ten years in international sales and marketing roles at the MIT Press.  She has considerable experience with sales management for books, journals and databases, emerging market entry strategies, library negotiations, and consortia relationships in the US, Europe, Brazil, India, China, and Southeast Asia.  In her current position, she endeavors to focus and balance Emerald’s product, author, librarian, and user needs within the US and Canadian market.

Dr. Juan Pablo Alperin is a co-director of the ScholCommLab, as well as an associate professor at the Canadian Institute for Studies in Publishing and an associate director of research of the Public Knowledge Project at Simon Fraser University, Canada.

He is a multi-disciplinary scholar, with training in computer science (BMath, University of Waterloo), social science (MA Geography, University of Waterloo), and education (PhD, Stanford University), who believes that research, especially when it is made freely available (as so much of today’s work is), has the potential to make meaningful and direct contributions to society, and that it is our responsibility as the creators of this research to ensure we understand the mechanisms, networks, and mediums through which our work is discussed and used.

Lombe is responsible for improving equity of participation in ORCID in currently underrepresented areas, especially the Global South. She is also responsible for growing membership and adoption in currently underrepresented regions whilst ensuring member satisfaction and value. She has a BA in Economics and an MA in Development Studies. Outside of work, Lombe enjoys reading, travelling and cooking.

As the Elsevier Foundation’s Director, Ylann Schemm drives inclusive health and research partnerships to support the UN Sustainable Development Goals building research capacity in developing countries and tackling health inequities. She has been an integral part of the Foundation’s growth since joining as a Program Officer in 2008. In addition, Ylann is Elsevier’s Vice President of Corporate Responsibility, building on two decades of corporate relations and responsibility roles which focus on gender, ‘sound science’ and sustainability collaborations. Since 2015, she has served as the Co-Chair of Elsevier’s Gender Equity Taskforce which shapes Elsevier’s contributions to inclusive research from gender balance in editorial boards to sex and gender analysis in Research. From June 2020- June 2022, Ylann was also served as the Chair of Research4Life’s Executive Council, a UN-publisher partnership to bridge access gaps for researchers and doctors in developing countries. Prior to joining Elsevier in 2005, Ylann held various roles in publishing and the non-profit sector, representing the European Platform for Dutch Education at the European Commission. She started her career as a writer and researcher for Time Life Books and holds an MA in Film & Television Studies from the University of Amsterdam and a BA, magna cum laude in English from Amherst College in Massachusetts. Ylann is both American and Dutch and based in Amsterdam.
