Working towards a more ethical information community

Many organizations - in the information community and beyond - are working to become more ethical in their production and distribution of information.The UN's sustainable development goals are a big driver of these efforts, with over 150 publishing organizations now signed up to the SDG Publishers Compact, and the ALA added Sustainability to their core library values in 2019. The speakers in this session will discuss the importance of ethics from a variety of viewpoints, as well as sharing the steps they're taking to become more ethical.

NISO Plus 2022

The NISO Plus conference brings people together from across the global information community to share updates and participate in conversations about our shared challenges and opportunities. The focus is on identifying concrete next steps to improve information flow and interoperability, and help solve existing and potential future problems. Andy Robinson

Andy leads CABI’s Publishing and Knowledge Business, which encompasses a range of knowledge resources as well supporting some of our international development projects. CABI puts know-how into people’s hands, turning evidence-based information into actionable advice addressing 8 of the UN’s SDGs. Our work includes: abstracting and indexing databases, which help people find essential content, perform literature reviews, and stay up-to-date in their specialist area; open access journals, providing a fast, open and reliable service for sharing research findings across all fields relevant to agriculture and the biosciences; books, compendia, knowledge banks and e-learning that synthesize information and expertise to help answer critical questions in agriculture and the environment. Before joining CABI I did a PhD on potatoes at the University of Cambridge, and have 30 years of publishing experience spanning journals, books, databases, news magazines/websites and e-learning, providing publishing services to many of the world’s leading societies and associations.

Dana Compton

Dana Compton is the Managing Director and Publisher for the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), having previously served in the role of Editorial Director for ASCE. Prior to joining ASCE in 2018, she was a Senior Consulting Associate with KWF Consulting, working with society and other clients to develop strategies around scholarly content. Dana has also served as Publication Director for PNAS and held production positions at the American Society of Clinical Oncology and Thompson Publishing Group. Dana is a past President of the Council of Science Editors (2019-2020) and remains an active CSE volunteer. She also serves as a UN/HESI SDG Publishers’ Compact Fellow, is a member of the 2022 Society Street Program Committee, and serves on the Text Recycling Research Project advisory board.

Dr. Haseeb Md. Irfanullah

Haseeb is a biologist-turned-development facilitator, who often introduces himself as a research enthusiast. Over the last two decades, he has worked for different international development organisations, academic institutions, donors, and the Government of Bangladesh in different capacities. Currently an independent consultant, Haseeb is also a visiting research fellow of the Center for Sustainable Development (CSD) at the University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB).

Haseeb is a member of the editorial board of ALPSP's Learned Publishing. His interest in research communication has engaged him with INASP’s (UK) initiatives, such as BanglaJOL and AuthorAID, and also as its associate. He has been involved in designing and facilitating sessions for early- & mid-career researchers and journal editors to improve their understanding of journal publishing practices and standards. He writes articles on scholarly systems and a Chef of The Scholarly Kitchen. Haseeb has a PhD in aquatic ecology from the University of Liverpool, UK.

Karim Boughida

Executive leader with a demonstrated history of working in the higher ed, IT, library, and data sectors. Skilled in AI, emerging tech, data management, archival and library research, innovation management, product/program management, team building, etc. During his tenure, he has led campus-wide innovation initiatives and strategic partnerships, including ones for a makerspace, XR Lab, Launch Lab, and AI Lab. His previous roles include AUL for digital initiatives and content management for George Washington University, senior info systems architect for Getty, and senior product manager for Endeavor Information Systems, among others. He is on the editorial board and associate editor of the peer-reviewed International Journal on Digital Libraries. Boughida completed his bachelor degree in library science from the University of Constantine, Algeria, and he earned his master’s degree in library and information science from Université de Montréal, Canada.

Rebekkah Smith Aldrich

Rebekkah Smith Aldrich, MLS, LEED AP, is currently the executive director of the Mid-Hudson. Library System in New York. She is the co-founder of the Sustainable Libraries Initiative and co-creator of the award-winning Sustainable Library Certification Program. Rebekkah currently services as the chair of the ALA Council Committee on Sustainability and is the sustainability columnist for Library Journal. Author of Sustainable Thinking: Ensuring Your Library’s Future in an Uncertain World; Resilience, part of the ALA Futures Series; and Libraries and Sustainability: Programs and Practices for Community Impact, Rebekkah focuses her professional attention on helping libraries and library workers be successful in the face of disruption and uncertainty.
