Amber Billey

Systems and Metadata Librarian, Bard College
Amber Billey is the Systems and Metadata Librarian at Bard College in Annandale-on-Hudson, New York. Prior to joining Bard, she was the Metadata Librarian at Columbia University Libraries from 2015-2017. Billey is a member of the PCC Task Group on Identity Management in NACO, and is the Co-Chair of the PCC BIBFRAME Task Group. She is also on the Advisory Board for the Digital Transgender Archive, and the editorial board for the Homosaurus - a linked data thesaurus for the LGBTQ community. Billey received her MLIS from Pratt Institute in 2009. When Billey isn’t thinking about metadata best practices and the future of library data, she enjoys hiking with her wife and their two dogs in the mountains.

How does one create awareness of the bias that may be introduced into automated systems? This session will look at the selection of vocabulary in establishing taxonomies and ontologies. What is the real nature of the issue? How might establishing, maintenance, and use of a thesaurus contribute to a more inclusive search/discovery process? And where should responsibility lie for developing such ostensibly neutral tools? How can we bring more diverse voices into the development/maintenance of these resources?
